Southern California Police Warning Residents of Recent Increase in ‘Distraction Thefts’

Distraction Thefts on the Rise in SoCal

Local authorities are urging residents to be vigilant in light of a recent increase in “distraction thefts” across Southern California. A media release from the Torrance Police Department states that criminals are using “deceptive tactics” in order to divert victims’ attention while stealing from them.

What are Distraction Thefts?

“Distraction thefts typically involve a suspect creating a scenario to divert a victim’s attention, allowing them or their accomplices to steal personal belongings or valuables,” Torrance police said. “Common tactics include asking for directions, spilling a drink or creating a scene that requires assistance.”

Protecting Yourself from Distraction Thefts

Officials provided four steps for residents to protect themselves:

  1. Stay aware: Always be aware of your surroundings and the people around you, especially in crowded places
  2. Be cautious: If approached by strangers asking for help or directions, maintain distance and be cautious before engaging
  3. Secure your belongings: Keep personal items close and secure, and avoid leaving valuables unattended, even for a moment
  4. Use technology: Use anti-theft devices or security apps to monitor belongings

What to Do If You’re a Victim

Anyone who witnesses suspicious behavior or believes they are a distraction theft or burglary victim should call police immediately.

Staying Safe and Vigilant

“We encourage residents to look out for one another,” the Torrance Police Department said. “We can create a safer community by working together…stay safe and vigilant.”
