Introduction to Osa Rooftop
Pasadena’s restaurant scene is looking up a bit more this summer thanks to the opening of a new rooftop restaurant that’s all about honoring California cuisine and its natural landscape. “Our theme was inspired by the surrounding and wonderful view of the San Gabriel Mountains and everything centers on this theme of what California means to us,” said Spencer Kushner, the managing partner of Boulevard Hospitality, which opened Osa Rooftop atop the new AC Hotel Pasadena in mid-July. “I think it’s got a really unpretentious elegance to it that starts with the vibe and the environment of the place,” he added.
Ambiance and Design
Overlooking the Rose Parade route, the restaurant is decked out with a lot of wood furniture handmade by local artists from reclaimed materials. Fire pits, a fountain and tile accents plus native plants that decorate the outdoor space are anchored by a real 20-foot tall olive tree, which was lifted with a crane to the sixth floor rooftop. “It was really an engineering masterpiece. The rooftop was specially engineered to hold that kind of weight,” he said. “There’s attention to detail to every part of this concept so honoring the natural elements, there’s no comparison to a real tree.”
Menu Highlights
The menu meanwhile is straightforward and locally sourced. Some of the highlights include Hand Pressed Tostones, which are fried banana chips served with guacamole and a spicy black bean dip. There’s also a King Salmon Crudo with white soy, seaweed salad and avocado on the menu and a Wagyu and Pork Meatballs dish made with vodka sauce and pistachio pesto. “We make our own vodka sauce and pistachio pesto and it’s just delicious,” he said. Entrees include the grilled swordfish, Charred Chicken Tacos, Steak Frites made with Angus beef and very beefy Osa Burger, which squeezes two wagyu patties, grilled onion, pickles and truffle dijonnaise between sesame seed buns. “It’s kind of in between a smash burger and a regular burger. It’s half a pound of beef so it’s a big burger,” Kushner said.
