Lost Man with Dementia Found Thanks to Infrared Heat-Seeking Technology

A Dramatic Rescue

A 78-year-old Malibu man with dementia who had gone missing in chilly December weather was located thanks to innovative technology and the quick response of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Malibu Search and Rescue Team.

The Disappearance

The man, whose identity was not released, was reported missing at around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, three hours after he had gone to check his mailbox and never returned. The temperature at the time was a chilly 48 degrees and falling, making his disappearance even more dangerous.

The Search

Using a drone equipped with infrared heat-seeking technology, Malibu Search and Rescue detected a "significant heat signature" in thick brush alongside a road. Believing this to be the missing person, the team deployed with medical and evacuation equipment. Upon arriving on the scene, the rescuers observed the missing man suffering from cold-related illness, confused and unable to walk.

The Rescue

The man was evaluated, wrapped in a blanket, and placed in a rescue basket. He was then treated for his illness and transported to an ambulance.
