Reducing Lines at Clippers Games with Tech

Must read

Introduction to Reduced Lines at Clippers Games

Lines are pretty much part of the live event experience – whether it’s getting in, getting food, or grabbing a drink. But tech is trying to change that.

Recently, I visited the Intuit Dome, the new home of the Clippers.

The Intuit Dome Experience

They tell me the entire stadium was designed to minimize wait times and get fans back in their seats.
There are more bathrooms plus a high tech facial recognition system that lets you enter, access suites and make purchases all using your face.

Facial Recognition System

The system isn’t always perfect – some guests aren’t signed up, or it can take longer to verify’s someone’s face, but when it works, it feels magical.
The tech has evolved since opening, too.
"I’d say every event, every game, something is different. We’ve changed something, we’ve tweaked it, we’ve made it better, we fixed the problem, we’ve done an enhancement. And so it’s a constant evolution," said George Hanna, Chief Technology and Digital Officer at the LA Clippers and Intuit Dome.

Concession Stands and Retail Shops

Concession stands and retail shops use facial recognition technology, mixed with spatial AI to help fans get in an out in record time.
"It’s not self checkout, it’s eliminating checkout," said Rich Wallace of AiFi, the spatial AI platform Intuit partnered with.
At many venues, average waits can be 30 minutes, at Intuit that number drops to less than 2.

Spatial AI Technology

AiFi’s system relies on AI-powered cameras that basically turn people into a virtual shopping carts. It tracks what you pick up (and put down) with 99.7 percent accuracy.
"AI in the physical world is something that people are not talking about enough today. Intuit Dome really brings that brings the applications of what’s possible to life," said Wallace.

Data Privacy and Job Impact

They tell me face data is only used for transactions and the tech hasn’t pared down jobs. On my visit, there were still plenty of staff on hand to help guests with everything from downloading the app to gaining access using your face.
"We’re not running any leaner from a labor perspective in those areas," said Hanna.
The Clippers tell me about 50% of attendees sign up for Game Face ID before an event – and by the end, that number jumps to 75%. If you change your mind, you can delete your facial data using the app instantly.

Conclusion

The use of facial recognition and spatial AI technology at the Intuit Dome has significantly reduced wait times for fans, making the overall experience more enjoyable. With the constant evolution of the technology, it will be exciting to see how it continues to improve and impact the live event experience.
