Must read

Rain and Snow Expected to Hit Southern California

A fast-moving storm dropped about a half-inch of rain in parts of Southern California, offering a preview of what’s to come, forecasters said Tuesday.

Rain and Thunderstorms Expected in the Greater Los Angeles Area

More rain is predicted in the greater Los Angeles area starting Tuesday night, with between a quarter-inch and a half-inch in the forecast. The storm will bring an increased chance of thunderstorms on Wednesday and Thursday.

Second Storm Predicted to Bring Heavy Rain and Flooding

A second storm could bring between a half-inch and 1 inch of rain, with a 10% to 20% chance of significant flooding and burn scar debris flows.

Previous Rainfall and Snowfall in the Region

Rain totals on Sunday were between a trace and a half-inch in parts of Los Angeles County. The showers moved quickly through the area, at about 25 mph from northwest to southeast, and prompted a flood advisory in the Eaton burn area. The flood advisory was lifted when the rain moved out of the area. Around 8 p.m. Sunday, showers subsided considerably over the region, and there were snow showers over the Grapevine. The combination of snow, 1 to 3 inches, and wind, with gusts up to 55 mph, created dangerous driving conditions through the Tejon Pass. Snow levels dropped to 3,500 feet on Sunday.

Forecast for the Week

"Another, potentially stronger, storm is on tap for Wednesday into Thursday. Gusty westerly winds are expected Sunday and Monday, and again Thursday," the National Weather Service (NWS) added.

Early estimates suggest a quarter- to half-inch of rain across the coast and valleys with up to a half-inch to an inch in the foothills and mountains during the mid-week storm, the NWS said.

Rain Chances and Forecast

Rain chances in LA and Orange counties are 30% on Tuesday night, 80% on Wednesday, and 70% on Thursday. It will be sunny on Friday and Saturday.

In the Riverside and San Bernardino metropolitan and valley areas, partly cloudy conditions are forecast on Tuesday night, with a 70% chance of rain on Wednesday, 80% on Thursday, and 20% Friday morning, with sunny conditions the rest of the day, and a sunny day on Saturday.

Cooler Daytime Temperatures and Warming Trend

Cooler daytime temperatures are also on the way, with highs in the upper 50s and low 60s throughout the week. Overnight lows will mostly be in the 40s and lower 50s. A warming and drying trend is expected by next weekend, with highs possibly climbing into the low 80s in the valleys.

Winter Storm Warning in the San Bernardino County Mountains

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Friday in the San Bernardino County mountains. Heavy snow is expected, with 2 to 4 inches falling between 4,000 and 5,000 feet, and 6 to 12 inches or more above 5,000 feet. Winds out of the south and west will gust as high as 55 miles per hour on Thursday.

Communities Affected by the Warning

Communities covered by the warning include Crestline, Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs, and Wrightwood.
