Palisades Fire: Blaze Grows to 22,660 Acres, Evacuations Expand Rapidly

The deadly Palisades fire grew to 22,660 acres by Saturday morning, with evacuations expanding rapidly in Encino, Tarzana, and Brentwood since Friday night as flames lit up ridge lines and threatened homes in Mandeville Canyon.

Aerial Firefighting Efforts Continue

Six helicopters flew throughout the night, dropping water from the Encino reservoir on the blaze as it entered its 5th day Saturday. Containment grew from 8% to 11% overnight, according to Cal Fire. However, despite the aerial firefighting and 100 engines surging into the Mandeville Canyon area, the flames spread by approximately 1,000 acres overnight, said Cal Fire’s Todd Hopkins.

Large Home Consumed by Blaze

At least one large home in Mandeville Canyon surrounded by lush vegetation was shown being consumed by the blaze Saturday morning on KCAL TV.

Evacuation Zones Expand

Tens of thousands of people are now under evacuation orders or warnings. The massive mandatory evacuation zone stretches from the Pacific Ocean to the west, the 405 Freeway to the east, San Vicente Boulevard to the south, and the Encino Reservoir to the north.

Additional Evacuation Shelters Open

Additional evacuation shelters have opened in the San Fernando Valley: The Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Recreation Center at 14201 Huston Street in Sherman Oaks and Lanark Recreation Center at 21816 Lanark Street in Canoga Park. An evacuation site for large animals is also open in the valley at the Hansen Dam in Pacoima.

Winds Expected to Increase

North to northeast winds are expected to gradually increase throughout the day, peaking this evening and overnight.

Fire Damage Assessment

Authorities suspect that nearly 6,000 structures may have been damaged or destroyed so far in the Palisades fire and will continue to assess the damage. Hopkins confirmed that 5,316 homes, cars, and other structures have been destroyed. An additional 12,250 structures are currently threatened.

Fatalities and Missing Persons

There have been 11 confirmed deaths as a result of the wildfires across Los Angeles, five of them in the Palisades fire. Another 13 people are missing, authorities said.

Investigation and Scams

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said Saturday morning authorities have not determined whether the fires ravaging the county were intentionally set, but LASD detectives were working with the LA county and city fire departments, the Los Angeles Police Department, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to determine their cause.

State Attorney General Robert Bonta warned businesses not to price gouge, and sounded an alert to beware of phony contractors, fake insurance adjusters, and other scammers looking to take advantage of wildfire victims. He also warned anyone looting homes in wildfire areas that they’ll be caught.

Conclusion

The Palisades fire continues to spread, with evacuations expanding rapidly and thousands of people affected. The fire is expected to continue burning throughout the day, with winds expected to increase.
