Mountain Lion Spotted in Santa Clarita Valley Backyard
Close Encounter
A Stevenson Ranch man had a startling experience when he spotted a mountain lion in the backyard of his home in the Santa Clarita Valley on October 28, 2024. Chris was outside checking on his dogs when he heard a unusual sound coming from above and looked up to see the majestic creature looking down from a tree.
A Second Look
Initially, Chris thought the sound was coming from a bird, but upon taking a closer look, he was shocked to see a mountain lion staring back at him. "I thought it was a bird and I looked up into the tree and I saw a mountain lion," he recounted. Taking no chances, Chris quickly took his dogs inside and went back outside to take some photos.
A Rare Sighting
This is not the first time Chris has encountered wildlife in his backyard, having previously spotted bobcats and coyotes. However, a mountain lion is a rare sight, especially in his neighborhood. "We’ve had other cats. We’ve had bobcats, we have tons of coyotes out here but never a mountain lion," he said.
The Mountain Lion’s Quick Escape
As Chris was taking photos, the mountain lion suddenly jumped out of the tree and made a swift escape up a nearby hill, leaving the property. Chris estimated the massive cat to be over 200 pounds, a formidable sight.
Newfound Apprehension
The encounter left Chris feeling apprehensive about venturing into his own backyard. "We’re in their neighborhood," he reflected. While he knows there are measures to take to deter wildlife, he acknowledges that living in an area with an abundance of wildlife comes with its risks.
