The Rev. Mario Gutierrez, a funeral director at Carnes Funeral Home in Texas City, has always been drawn to helping others through difficult times. Recently, Gutierrez played a key role in organizing a procession to honor the victims of a devastating plane crash in Galveston.<\/p>\n
On December 22, a small Mexican Navy plane carrying eight passengers, including a young patient, crashed into the Galveston Bay. The plane was on a medical support mission with Fundaci\u00f3n Michou y Mau, a nonprofit that helps transfer pediatric burn patients in Mexico to Shriners Children\u2019s Texas hospital in Galveston. Two passengers survived, but six people, including the young patient, lost their lives in the tragedy.<\/p>\n
Gutierrez was celebrating his birthday with his family when he heard about the crash. Without hesitation, he knew he had to do everything in his power to help honor the victims. "Four words started everything: ‘How can we help?’" he recalled. This simple question sparked a chain of events that would ultimately lead to a heartfelt tribute to the victims.<\/p>\n
Gutierrez was determined to respect the cultural traditions of the victims and their families. In Mexican culture, funerals are typically held quickly, with cremation and disposition often taking place within 24-48 hours. Gutierrez worked tirelessly to ensure that the necessary permits, death certificates, and consulate interactions were completed efficiently, so the victims could be returned to their hometowns and families as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
On January 2, Gutierrez led a procession from Texas City to Galveston Scholes Field Airport, accompanied by multiple law enforcement vehicles. The procession was a poignant tribute to the victims, with five caskets carrying the remains of the deceased. As they passed by, onlookers knew that the caskets were a symbol of respect and dignity for the victims and their families. "I know that as we were passing people, they knew what those five caskets were about," Gutierrez said. "Immediately it came to their head, ‘Wow. There they go. They’re going home.’"<\/p>\n
Five of the six passengers who died in the crash were transported back to Mexico on January 2. The remains of the young child who died in the crash are still in Galveston, where his parents are currently staying while his mother recovers from her injuries. Gutierrez and his team are working on arrangements to bring the family home to Mexico as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
