More than a month after first announcing her resignation, Fort Bend ISD Trustee Sonya Jones officially resigned from her role during a board meeting Monday.

The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees discussed her resignation during a nearly hour-and-a-half closed session Monday, after which the board president, Kristin K. Tassin, announced that the board would be deciding on a course of action to fill the position 5 trustee vacancy at a board meeting on June 23. Jones was not up for reelection during the May 3 election.

“I acknowledge on behalf of the board, Trustee Jones’s resignation,” Tassin said. “I will include for the board’s consideration a process for appointment to fill the position 5 at the June 23 regular meeting.”

In a press release Tuesday, Tassin said under Texas law, Jones is considered “a holdover trustee and can continue to act as a trustee until her successor is appointed.”

In a statement to Houston Public Media Tuesday, Jones alluded to bullying of the board and administration by parents as the reason for her resignation.

“The bullying, intimidation and disrespect of [FBISD’s] current and past board members, board counsel, its administration and teachers by its parents is very traumatic,” Jones said.

Before the board entered closed session Monday, three parents, including former Trustee Kristen Malone, spoke in favor of Jones’s resignation and accused Jones of posting disparaging statements on social media.

“This isn’t the kind of leadership our students, staff or families deserve,” Malone said. “We need board members who lead with integrity, who make firm, lawful decisions and stick to them. We need trustees who don’t cave to chaos [and] play games.”

Jones had originally announced her resignation in a social media post in May, according to the Fort Bend Star.

However, in a May 30 Facebook post, the Fort Bend County Republican Party said that Jones had rescinded her resignation before the board took any formal action and before the original resignation date of May 19. The party also defended Jones and said she was being treated unfairly.
