Woman’s Charges in Hit-and-Run Death of Cyclist Dropped Due to Insufficient Evidence

Arrest and Investigation

Nyla Gamboa, 22, was arrested in early December 2024 by Harris County Precinct 4 Constable deputies for allegedly failing to stop and render aid involving death. The charges were dropped on January 6, 2025, citing "insufficient evidence of defendant’s guilt," according to online court documents.

The Incident

On December 4, 2024, at around 8:29 a.m., officers responded to a report of a major crash involving a bicycle located at the intersection of Airtex Boulevard and Brundage Drive in Houston. According to the original charging instrument, two witnesses allegedly saw a gray SUV traveling westbound on Airtex strike a cyclist also traveling west. The driver of the SUV did not stop, and the rider was pronounced dead less than 30 minutes later.

Investigation and Arrest

Deputies found parts of the SUV that was allegedly used to hit the bicyclist on the scene, which were identified as belonging to a gray Cadillac XT5. A vehicle matching the description was found parked in front of a residence in the 15000 block of Bayberry Meadow. Security video from the location allegedly showed a woman exit the vehicle and flee the scene on foot. Authorities contacted the owner of the vehicle, who said the car had been rented to Gamboa. Deputies said the damage present on the vehicle allegedly matched the parts left behind at the scene of the accident.

Arrest at the Airport

Gamboa was arrested later that same day at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport by deputies after a warrant had been issued for her arrest. Following the arrest, the constable’s office said via a social media post that Gamboa was allegedly attempting to board a flight out of the state.

Charges Dropped

The charges against Gamboa were dropped on January 6, 2025, citing "insufficient evidence of defendant’s guilt," according to online court documents. No further details were given as to why the charges were dropped, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The defense attorney said to be representing Gamboa, according to court records, also could not be immediately reached for comment.
