Sustainable Leather Alternative Showcased At Rodeo

Must read

Introduction to Rheom Materials

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, a significant event in Houston, recently concluded, leaving behind a trail of exciting innovations. One notable innovation came from Rheom Materials, a Houston-based pioneer in next-generation materials. They showcased a scalable, bio-based alternative to traditional leather, known as Shorai, which is 93 percent bio-based.

What is Shorai?

Shorai is a game-changing material that looks and feels like traditional leather but is made from bio-based sources. Rheom Materials presented Shorai through two custom, western-inspired outfits that showcased cowboy flair with a sustainable twist. The outfits, which included a skirt, a leather jacket, and a leather top, were designed to demonstrate the comfort, flexibility, and natural look of Shorai.

Showcasing Shorai at the Rodeo

Rheom Materials captured the energy of their bio-leather outfits at the rodeo in a short commercial video and photo shoot. Models wearing the outfits were seen dancing, enjoying the festivities, and participating in various activities, such as riding and visiting the wine garden. The goal was to showcase the comfort, flexibility, and natural look of Shorai. According to Megan Beck, Rheom’s business development manager, "What we really wanted to showcase in this is the energy and the movement of the leather, and to show people how good it can look in apparel, and how easy it is to wear."

Benefits of Shorai

Shorai has several benefits over traditional leather. It is made from 93 percent bio-based sources, making it a more sustainable option. Additionally, it is comfortable, flexible, and looks natural, making it an excellent choice for apparel and accessories. Rheom Materials plans to scale production of Shorai at a competitive price point while reducing its carbon footprint by 80 percent compared to synthetic leather.

Future Plans

Rheom Materials has big plans for Shorai. The company wants to see Shorai products come to market sometime this year. They have already set up a large-scale production partner and plan to start their first production run in April. According to Beck, "We have companies globally right now that are testing materials, that are prototyping, that are making garments, making handbags and footwear, and making eyewear because we have a plastic, as well." Over the next five years, Rheom plans to increase production capacity and make Shorai a leading sustainable material in the market.

Conclusion

Rheom Materials’ Shorai is a revolutionary material that has the potential to change the way we think about leather. With its comfort, flexibility, and natural look, Shorai is an excellent choice for apparel and accessories. As Rheom Materials scales production and reduces its carbon footprint, Shorai is set to become a leading sustainable material in the market. With its innovative approach and commitment to sustainability, Rheom Materials is poised to make a significant impact in the industry.
