Sexual Assault Allegations: Houston Police Captain Released on Bond
A 32-year veteran of the Houston Police Department (HPD) has been released from the Galveston County Jail after posting bond, following his arrest on allegations of sexually assaulting a child.
Background
Daryn Edwards, 59, was arrested on February 20 and initially charged with possession of child pornography. Additional charges were later added, including continuous sexual assault of a child, aggravated sexual assault, and sexual performance of a child.
Bond and Release
Edwards was given a combined bond of $1 million on Tuesday. Officials with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that he bonded out of jail around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
HPD’s Action
Edwards, who is the captain of HPD’s Auto Theft Division, was relieved of duty pending the outcome of an investigation when his arrest was announced.
Allegations of Sexual Abuse
Court documents revealed a young female victim made an outcry to an adult, stating that Edwards had been sexually assaulting her since elementary school. The victim alleged that Edwards would send sexually explicit pictures and request nude photos from her, and sometimes bribed her with money to send the photos in order to keep Edwards from getting upset.
The documents also stated that the victim knew Edwards was saving the photos she sent because she would receive a notification of photo saved from the Snapchat app, which is one of the apps Edwards used. The victim claimed that Edwards told her he had a hidden photo album with the pictures in it and threatened to "ruin her life with them."
Additionally, Edwards allegedly used hidden cameras to capture images of the victim in compromising positions.
Next Court Date
Edwards’ next court date is scheduled for April 24.
