Strong Waves Expected for the Texas Gulf Coast

The Texas Gulf Coast could see some strong waves this weekend as Hurricane Rafael heads into the Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane Rafael’s Journey

Hurricane Rafael made landfall in Cuba on Wednesday afternoon as a Category 3 hurricane. PBS reports the storm is expected to bring “life-threatening” storm surges, winds, and flash floods for Cuba. However, according to the National Weather Service, the hurricane is expected to slowly move to the west before stalling out and weakening.

Impact on the Texas Coast

Dan Brown, the Hurricane Specialist Branch Chief for the National Hurricane Center, said the southeast coasts of Texas aren’t likely to be affected.

What You Need to Know

"The main thing folks [in Texas] should be paying attention to, really, is swells that are going to be produced," he said. "Large waves from the hurricane that are likely to impact much of the U.S. Gulf Coast."

Brown added the swells could create hazardous beach conditions.
