Rainfall Expected in Houston, Possible Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Through Thursday
Rain Expected Tonight and Saturday
A Houston driver goes through rainy weather on the service road for I-45.
Friday night showers are expected in Houston, according to the National Weather Service.
“Nuisance showers and thunderstorms through the end of the day and then later tonight,” said Bradley Brokamp, a local meteorologist for the weather service. “More so in the early morning hours of Saturday; not too long after midnight.”
Saturday to be Dry, Rain Chances Low
Brokamp said Saturday afternoon in the Houston area should be dry with no risk of showers and storms. The expected rainfall is between 0.25 to 0.75 inches.
October’s Dry Spell Comes to an End
This marks a stark contrast to the dry October Houstonians experienced. According to Brokamp, Houston received 0.3 inches of rain last month, which is 5 inches below what is typically expected for October.
“It is abnormally dry, and there’s still a dry to moderate drought condition over the course of the area, but the additional rainfall will probably help with that,” Brokamp said. “It won’t be super exceptional, but it will take our ground water and make the soil a little more soggier versus exceptionally dry.”
Looking Ahead to Next Week
As residents head into work on Monday, Brokamp said rain chances are not high. Expect it to remain dry until Wednesday or Thursday next week. Forecasts indicate that a cold front is expected by midweek.
“Later in the week on Thursday, we will get a more robust cold front that will push through the area,” Brokamp said. “That should bring some much higher rain chances during that period.”
Driving Tips for Rainy Conditions
The temperature lows on Thursday are expected to be in the mid-40s and highs can climb to the mid-70s.
For those driving through the area during the expected showers, the National Weather Service states it’s imperative to drive with caution and be mindful of ponding, because it may increase the risk of hydroplaning.
