Valuable UH Big Man Kalifa Sakho Returns From a Surgical Procedure On His Back, Giving Kelvin Sampson a Healthy Roster For First Time — a PaperCity Exclusive

Must read

Introduction to Kalifa Sakho’s Journey

Kalifa Sakho, the 6-foot-11 transfer center, has been preparing for his key role in No. 2 Houston’s front-court rotation. However, what many may not know is that Sakho underwent a surgical procedure on his back in August. Despite this setback, Sakho is already back to practicing and playing without the pain that forced him to sit out practices throughout the summer and early fall.

The Road to Recovery

According to University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson, Sakho’s back issues began in June. "He’d be two days on, day off. Two days on, day off. We finally shut him down to see if shutting him down would help. Then we realized, you know what — we just need to go in and do the procedure," Sampson explained. Fortunately, the procedure was a success, and Sakho is now back to 100 percent.

A Full Healthy Roster

Sampson is also pleased to announce that reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year JoJo Tugler is "100 percent" for the first time since his offseason foot surgery. With both Sakho and Tugler back to full health, Sampson feels like he has a full healthy roster for the first time. "Just this week was probably our first week where everybody’s on the floor," Sampson said.

Sakho’s Impressive Return

Sampson has been impressed with Sakho’s performance in his return to practice. "He’s been awesome. We’ve had three practices this week, he’s practiced every minute of every practice. You’d never know he’d even had a procedure," Sampson praised. Sakho’s teammates have also noticed the difference in his performance, with UH senior forward Ramon Walker Jr. commenting on Sakho’s athleticism and potential.

Overcoming Setbacks

Sakho’s extended time off the court may have affected his development, but Sampson isn’t worried. "Of course it will, but I don’t worry about it. I don’t worry about things I can’t control," Sampson said. Sakho dealt with back issues last season at Sam Houston State, but he still managed to start all 31 games. Now that he’s feeling healthier than he has in a long time, Sakho is determined to make a significant impact on the team.

Team Dynamics

With five-star true freshman Chris Cenac Jr. expected to start in the front court alongside Tugler, Sakho’s importance is magnified. Experienced Cougar reserve center Cedric Lath will also be part of UH’s revamped big man mix. Sakho has been watching film of JoJo Tugler, trying to pick up some of his teammate’s skills. "I was watching highlights of JoJo, and he’s got like a crazy impact on the game. I’m trying to do the same thing. Just to help the team," Sakho said.

Conclusion

Kalifa Sakho’s journey is a testament to his determination and perseverance. Despite facing setbacks, Sakho is now back and ready to make a significant impact on the team. With his impressive return to practice and his growing chemistry with his teammates, Sakho is poised to become a key player in No. 2 Houston’s front-court rotation. As the season begins, fans can expect great things from this talented transfer center.
