A Celebration of Care and Compassion
El Centro de Corazón marked a significant milestone, celebrating over three decades of providing affordable, quality healthcare to Houston’s East End and beyond. The annual luncheon, held on September 19, brought together a sea of supporters at Hotel ZaZa to recognize the nonprofit’s mission and impact.
A Community United
The event was led by chairs Vicky Dominguez and Maritza Gonzales, who were joined by honorary chairs Leisa Holland Nelson Bowman and Leila Perrin. The afternoon began with emcee Anayeli Ruiz of KHOU Ch. 11, setting the tone for a warm and inspiring celebration. CEO Marcie Mir spoke passionately about El Centro’s continued commitment to expanding access to care for under-resourced communities, highlighting the organization’s dedication to making a positive impact.
Honoring Community Leaders
The spotlight turned to this year’s honorees. Vicki Luna, named the 2025 Community Leader Honoree, received a standing ovation as she took the stage. Luna reflected on her upbringing in Uvalde and the philanthropic values instilled by her parents, sharing a moving and personal story. The Corporate Leader Honoree award went to Calpine, recognized for its ongoing commitment to community service. Cathryn Martinez, representing the company’s Community and Government Relations division, accepted the honor on Calpine’s behalf.
Inspiring Stories of Resilience
Keynote speaker John Quiñones, ABC News veteran and creator of What Would You Do?, captivated the audience with tales of resilience and purpose. His stories drew laughter, applause, and a few misty eyes from the crowd, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
A Night to Remember
The event brought together a polished crowd of 300, including notable attendees such as Beckie and Gasper Mir, Sippi Khurana, Gloria Luna Bounds, George Connelly, Michele Leal, and George Farah. Other attendees included Marilu Garza, Misty Mousa Lanza, HCC Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Carrie Potter, Graciela Saenz, Ofelia Vujasinovic, Claudia Ortega Hogue, and John Cisneros.
