Fort Bend ISD is seeking a candidate to replace Trustee Sonya Jones, who announced her intention to resign last month.
Fort Bend ISD is seeking candidates to fill a vacant role on the school board after trustee Sonya Jones’ resignation last month.
Texas law allows the board to select a replacement trustee to serve the remainder of Jones’ term, which ends in May 2026.
To qualify, a candidate must be a U.S. citizen who is at least 18 years old and has lived in the state for at least 12 months.
The candidate must also have lived in the east side of the Houston-area school district for at least six months prior to their appointment and be registered to vote in that side of the district by the date of their appointment.
Eligible candidates cannot have a felony conviction that hasn’t been “pardoned or otherwise released,” according to a school district news release. They also cannot have been ruled “mentally incapacitated or partially incapacitated” by a court.
Interested candidates should submit their resumes and statement of interests outlining why they want to serve as a trustee, their involvement in the school district and public schools in general.
The statement should also include whether the candidate has previously run for the board of trustees, and if so, when as well as how long the candidate has lived in the district.
Applications are due by 5 p.m. Monday, July 7.
The board of trustees will review applications and may interview candidates during the closed session of its July 21 meeting. The new trustee will be announced July 28 and start their term Aug. 4.
