HOUSTON – Authorities are piecing together what led up to a deadly shooting where two men’s bodies were found in a southwest Houston park.

The Houston Police Department told KPRC 2’s Bryce Newberry they got a call just before 6 a.m. at Wildheather Park off W Fuqua St.
Investigators learned that the two men, both retired and in their 70s, were walking in the park when they were gunned down in an ambush-style attack.
Most of the shots came from behind the men, catching them off guard, and the suspect—or suspects—stood over them and released additional rounds of gunfire from above, according to HPD Sgt. Michael Arrington.
The shooting doesn’t appear to be a robbery, police said. The motive is still unknown.
“They were just out here walking,” Arrington said. “None of their pockets were ruffled through, from what we can tell or look like anything was stolen from them. So, it does appear to be more targeted or an ambush-style attack.”
The victims have been identified as neighbors who live nearby the park and walk in the trail every day.
KPRC 2’s Bryce Newberry spoke with one of the victims’ son, Willie Fuentes. He identified his father as Nathaniel Fuentes.
He described his father as a great man who always instilled faith in his children.
“I pray for that person, you know, that they come for repentance, too. Because I know that my father’s in heaven,” said Willie Fuentes.
He said his father has been walking on the trail behind the park for months around 5 a.m. He said his father and the neighbor recently started walking together.
A couple of people in the area reported hearing gunshots between 5:40 a.m. and 5:50 a.m.
Investigators found a double-digit number of shell casings left behind at the scene.
A neighbor’s surveillance camera captured the sound of gunfire. There was also a white car captured speeding away on video and police believe the vehicle may be connected to the shooting.
It’s unclear how many suspects are involved.
Police asked visitors who are planning to go to the park to be vigilant as they continue searching.
