Before serving two terms as mayor, Turner worked for more than 25 years in the Texas Legislature as the state representative for Northwest Houston. He left an incredible legacy, and according to Hollins, he is deserving of honor. Turner acted as a mentor to Hollins prior to his entry into the political arena, and over time, became a dear friend.
Turner’s Impact on the Community
Hollins first presented the proposal to Houston City Council, where he became emotional while recalling Turner’s impact. Turner already has a park named after him in the Acres Homes area, where he grew up. Community members recently launched a petition to rename the Bethune Empowerment Center in the area after him. City council member Tiffany Thomas supports the initiative, pointing out that the appetite is there because the community understands his significance and contribution.
The Renaming Process
In order for the renaming to move forward, the city’s planning department must receive a petition representing 75% of the owners along the street. Since the city owns the majority of the plots, the petition would require only one private owner to join. Other owners include the Landry’s Group, Tennison Lofts, and Brookfield Asset Management. A spokesperson for Brookfield Asset Management did not comment on the proposal, while Landry’s and Tennison Lofts did not comment either.
Additional Honors
Thomas and Hollins also support the naming of a terminal in Bush Intercontinental Airport after the late Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. The city council already unanimously approved that resolution, and the public comment period was slated to close on Sunday.
