Reading: The Key to Unlocking a Brighter Future

HOUSTON – Over 425 volunteers came together to read to nearly 17,000 kids across 39 elementary schools, making Houston Reads Day 2025 a massive success. But what makes this day so significant?

Why All the Hype?

Reading by third grade is a game-changer. According to Literacy Now, only 27% of Houston-area third graders are reading at grade level. This alarming statistic is the driving force behind Literacy Now’s mission to transform communities and help children read at grade level by the end of their program.

The Importance of Reading

Literacy Now has conducted research correlating reading difficulties with a range of negative outcomes, including serious behavior problems, joblessness, crime, and homelessness. Reading is not just a skill; it’s a key to unlocking a brighter future.

Literacy Now’s Mission

Literacy Now CEO Jacklyn Minimah-Wilson explains, "Our mission is to transform communities to help children read so they can be on grade level when they finish our program."

A Day of Reading

On Houston Reads Day, volunteers from all walks of life came together to read to children at schools across the city. Former Houston Texan and children’s author Wade Smith was among those who attended, reading his book Smitty Tackles Bullying to a captivated audience.

"It was just another amazing opportunity to participate in Houston Reads Day," Smith said. "It’s my second time as an author for Houston Reads Day, and this time, as a featured author here at Collins Elementary School. It’s an exciting opportunity to get in front of young people and read them my book. Smitty Tackles Bullying has themes throughout the story that are applicable for kids throughout their day-to-day lives and things that they can take going forward."

H-Town Heroes

Of course, it wouldn’t be an H-Town event without some hometown heroes. Houston Texans mascot Toro, the cheerleaders, and local elected officials all joined in on the fun, reading to children and spreading the importance of reading.

What’s Next?

Although Houston Reads Day may be over, Literacy Now’s work continues. If you’re looking to help a child you know, Literacy Now recommends reading to them just 15 minutes every day. Want to learn more? Visit literacynowhouston.org.
