The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo: A Celebration of Community and Scholarship
For years, Tony Bradfield has been dressing up his Tenenbaum Jewelers boutique on Westheimer in themed paraphernalia. From massive tennis balls for the River Oaks tournament to enormous baseballs for the Houston Astros playoff runs, the store has always been a reflection of the city’s spirit. And now, with a steer on the roof and a menagerie of farm animals grazing in the surrounding parking area, it’s all a sign that the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is just around the corner.
A Passion for the Rodeo
Bradfield’s love for the rodeo is more than just a theme. He is proud of the scholarship element of the event and his role on the Steer Auction Committee, along with partner Dana Barton, the Rodeo Auction Angels. Last year, they raised close to $250,000 for scholarships through their participation in the Steer Auction Committee. Bradfield is a Silver Spur member of the Rodeo scene, having given $25,000 for scholarships.
"I’m proud of the impact the rodeo has on the city and on the youth," Bradfield says. "It’s a wonderful asset that brings everyone together, regardless of their background, culture, or interests."
A Western Themed Jewelry Collection
As part of the rodeo homage, the interiors of Tenenbaum Jewelers are sporting a new Western look, complete with a tequila and whiskey bar dubbed The Sapphire Saloon. Cowhides, faux animal trophies, and little animals share space with diamonds, emeralds, turquoise, and other fabulous jewels that Tenenbaum built its reputation around. The store will also be featuring a special collection of sophisticated Western-themed jewelry from Vincent Peach Fine Jewelry, including diamond studded horseshoe earrings in 18-karat gold to sterling silver necklaces featuring spurs, stirrups, and other cowboy-inspired designs.
The Rodeo Auction Angels
The Rodeo Auction Angels, Bradfield and Barton, are the final hangers-on in the steer auction when all the glamour is over, when all the million-dollar and six-figure sales are over. They step up to the plate for the youngsters at the bottom of the pack, remaining in the arena as late as 6:30 in the evening for an event that begins in the early morning. No kid goes home unrewarded, thanks to this duo and their supporters.
Contribution to the Community
The rodeo brings people together, regardless of their background, culture, or interests. For Bradfield, it’s a way to give back to the community and support the youth. As he says, "It’s truly for the kids, and it brings our community together unlike anything else."
