A Series of Cold Fronts Expected

A series of cold fronts will move into Southeast Texas again over the weekend, dropping temperatures below freezing.

Temperatures to Continue Trending Cold

Temperatures will continue to trend cold into the weekend after a rainy Wednesday. A leading cold snap is expected to arrive Saturday afternoon and bring a return of freezing temperatures Sunday morning moving into the Brazos Valley and Piney Woods areas.

Arctic Air and Freezing Temperatures Expected

Another surge of arctic air and freezing temperatures will arrive on Monday into Tuesday. The Houston area is projected to see temperatures as low as 26 degrees late Monday and 24 degrees on Tuesday, according to early predictions.

Coldest Air of the Season Expected

The cold snap early next week could bring the coldest air of the season for Southeast Texas with hard freezes reaching Interstate 10 and possibly closer to the coast, according to the National Weather Service.

Weather System May Bring Precipitation

"In addition to this arctic air intrusion, a weather system may overspread the area and bring the possibility of frozen or freezing precipitation late Monday into Tuesday," according to a weather update from NWS. "While there is greater confidence in the cold air forecast, the snow/sleet/freezing rain potential is much less certain."

"It is also quite possible this weather system develops too far form the area to generate any precipitation over southeast TX," according to NWS.

Cold Snap Comes After First Freezing Temperatures

The cold snap comes more than a week after temperatures fell below 32 degrees in the Houston area, ringing in the first freezing temperatures of the year.

City of Houston’s Response

Despite temperatures reaching dangerous conditions, the Houston forecast didn’t reach the threshold — 24 degrees or 15 degrees with wind chill for two consecutive hours— that would prompt the city to open warming centers.
