Shelters and warming centers are opening across the Houston area as it braces for freezing temperatures and significant snowfall.

Temperatures in the region are expected to be near or below freezing from Monday night through Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service, which is forecasting a Tuesday night low of about 15 degrees. Much of the Houston area is expected to see between 1-3 inches of snow, with potential accumulations of 5-6 inches in some parts of the region.

The approaching winter weather is also prompting closures of schools, government offices, and medical facilities.

Meanwhile, city and county officials in the region, as well as local non-profits, are opening shelters and warming centers to provide residents a respite from the cold.
