Security Measures Increase at University of Houston Following Sexual Assault

The University of Houston has taken steps to increase security measures on campus, including deploying security guards on bikes and patrols near parking garages, following a recent sexual assault incident.

Enhanced Security Measures

The incident, which occurred in the Welcome Center Parking Garage, involved a 40-year-old suspect, Eric Brown, who is still on the run. In response to the incident, the University has increased police presence on campus, with the University of Houston Police Department (UHPD) doubling the number of security personnel in a short period.

Security Patrols and Monitoring

According to UH officials, plans are underway to further expand the police force, with additional details to be announced soon. Enhanced security monitoring is also being ramped up, with new security staff patrolling campus grounds and buildings 24/7, with a particular focus on parking lots and high-traffic areas.

Student Reactions

KPRC2 Reporter Corley Peel spoke with students about the security upgrades. Isaac Lopez expressed concerns about the response to the incident, stating, "I think they included some more officers in parking lots and garages. I think some of the response is tone deaf and I think some of the response is not appropriate or not the extent that a lot of the students want."

Lopez and his friend, Gillen, also expressed a desire for more lighting on campus, with Gillen stating, "It’s unnerving knowing Brown is still on the run." Gillen also shared his own safety measures, saying, "I have a little bit of pepper spray with me. I had it in my dorm duct taped the first semester, but definitely busted it out the second semester. I walk in a buddy system to my night class. I have faith that UH will get it together and figure stuff out, but until then we just try to do our best."

University Response

In a statement, UH officials acknowledged and understood the concerns regarding campus safety, stating, "Our efforts will continue to be focused on providing a safe learning and working environment for our entire community. Please stay vigilant, report any suspicious activity to UHPD at (713) 743-3333, and utilize campus safety resources."
