When the Stars blew a three-goal lead to Vancouver with one minute remaining in regulation of Game 78 of the regular season, the historic loss felt like the start of a concerning trend.<\/p>\n
Dallas went on to lose the next four games in regulation by multi-goal margins, ending the regular season on a seven-game losing streak. They limped into the playoffs, with physical injuries and bruised confidence.<\/p>\n
What seemed like possibly the worst loss in a decade for the Stars may have just been a blueprint for how they\u2019d go on to win in the postseason.<\/p>\n
The Stars are the first team in Stanley Cup playoff history to overcome two multi-goal deficits in a third period and win in regulation in the same postseason. Dallas overcame a 2-0 deficit early in the third of Game 7 against Colorado before winning 4-2 thanks to a Mikko Rantanen hat trick. They overcame a 3-1 deficit Wednesday night in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals against Edmonton to win 6-3.<\/p>\n
In neither game did the Stars look poised for a furious comeback after two periods. Dallas looked defeated, and simply like the less-skilled team, after 40 minutes against Edmonton. The Oilers scored two goals 1:40 apart in the second period to build a sizable lead.<\/p>\n
But Dallas surged out of the locker room following the second intermission, with Miro Heiskanen scoring 32 seconds into the third on the power play and Mikael Granlund and Matt Duchene adding power-play goals to take over the lead within 5:58 of the third-period puck drop.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a calmness to this team,\u201d Duchene said. \u201cThe one thing that\u2019s impressed me about this group from Day 1 is just the even keel, win or lose, play well, play bad, have a great period, have a bad period, it\u2019s just right back at it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stars coach Pete DeBoer has mixed feelings about the team\u2019s need to constantly prove its resilience.<\/p>\n
The Stars have sacrificed the first goal in 11 of 14 playoff contests and have gone an impressive 6-5 in those games. They\u2019ve overcome third-period deficits four times in this playoff run after doing so only three times in the regular season. They have also been their best after a loss with a 5-0 record this postseason.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not an easy group to coach that way, because why are we waiting to do this in order to respond?\u201d DeBoer said. \u201cBut they\u2019ve stepped up and responded every time we\u2019ve been in that spot, and their resilience as a group is probably the most admirable thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
The way the Stars have won many of their nine playoff wins hasn\u2019t been ideal, but wins this time of year rarely are. <\/p>\n
All of the teams left in the playoffs have had to show some resilience. The Florida Panthers overcame a 2-0 series deficit to Toronto to win in seven games. The Oilers did the same in their series against the Kings, winning four straight to secure the series in six games. They are also 5-2 when trailing first this postseason. Carolina, despite an easier road than the others, still has two comeback wins. <\/p>\n
The Stars took a 1-0 lead in their conference finals series despite not playing their best game for two periods. They know there\u2019s another level still to reach. <\/p>\n
But even if they find themselves behind early in Game 2 on Friday \u2014 or any other games this series \u2014 there may not be a group more equipped to respond. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe nice thing is when you win a game in the playoffs without your A-game, you want to take it and run with it,\u201d Duchene said. \u201cWe want to be better next game. That\u2019s a dangerous hockey team over there, and you saw it at times. <\/p>\n
\u201cAt the end of the day, you take that one, you run, and you try to get greedy and take two at home.\u201d<\/p>\n
