He became a father 24 days after the Masters. Nine days after that came the Big Misunderstanding at the PGA Championship.<\/p>\n He won Olympic gold in Paris. His most recent tour win was last Sept. 1.<\/p>\n \u201cIt would be silly to say it didn\u2019t set me back a little bit, but at the end of the day it\u2019s one of those things where accidents happen,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m going to live my life. I can\u2019t live my life in a bubble.\u201d<\/p>\n It isn\u2019t as though golf life has bottomed out. In six starts this season his worst finish is T25. He has four top-11 finishes and is coming off a T2 at the Texas Children\u2019s Houston Open.<\/p>\n Meanwhile he\u2019s extended his run as the world\u2019s No. 1-ranked golfer to 97 straight weeks, the longest by any male golfer not named Woods, who holds the record of 281.<\/p>\n \u201cI think the biggest thing for him this year going into Houston was getting his reps up,\u201d said Royal Oaks pro emeritus Randy Smith, Scheffler\u2019s instructor since age 6. \u201cInjury-wise he\u2019s doing really well. The more reps he has, the more he understands.\u201d<\/p>\n In Houston he certainly looked closer to vintage Scheffler, tying his own course record with a second-round 62. His final-round 63 left him one shot behind winner Min Woo Lee.<\/p>\n \u201cHe was much more tolerant of imperfections,\u201d Smith said. \u201cYou know, a little bit of a pull-driver here is not that big a deal. He\u2019s very close to hitting it dead on the button. I think he realizes that, and I think it reflected in the way he played the golf course.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s little wonder Scheffler and World No. 2 Rory McIlroy are this week\u2019s heavy favorites as Highland Park High and University of Texas product Scheffler attempts to become the first Masters repeat winner since Woods in 2001 and 2002.<\/p>\n The Masters is the only major 36-year-old McIlroy lacks to finish the career grand slam, and he\u2019s 0 for 10 at Augusta National since winning his most recent major, the 2014 PGA Championship.<\/p>\n McIlroy, though, won the AT&T Pebble Beach in early February and the Players Championship three weeks ago, marking the first time in his career that he\u2019s won twice before the Masters.<\/p>\n Conversely, this is the first time in four years that Scheffler hasn\u2019t won at least twice heading into Augusta.<\/p>\n Prior to his three-shot victory over runner-up McIlroy in the 2022 Masters, Scheffler won three of his previous five starts. In his three starts entering last year\u2019s Masters, he won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Players Championship and tied for second in Houston.<\/p>\n But even at less than peak form, Scheffler always is in the hunt at Augusta National, where his debut T19 in 2020 remains his worst finish.<\/p>\n Two years ago he posted a second-round 75, shot only one round in the 60s and still tied for 10th.<\/p>\n \u201cWhy does my game fit so well at Augusta National?\u201d he asked, rhetorically. \u201cIt\u2019s a good question. The best way I could describe is when I\u2019m in control of my golf ball, I have very good strategy for playing the golf course.<\/p>\n \u201cBut at the end of the day, you\u2019ve got to hit the shots.\u201d<\/p>\n Once you\u2019ve won at Augusta National, as has been shown throughout the Masters\u2019 89-year history, a sixth sense sets in for how to win when in contention.<\/p>\n Which is more important? Rolling into Augusta on a hot run? Or having Augusta National muscle memory, knowing almost every nook and cranny of the course and where you\u2019ve pulled off pressurized shots?<\/p>\n \u201cI think they\u2019re co-equals,\u201d Smith said. \u201cNumber one, you want to go into it where you feel like your form is in pretty good shape. And if it\u2019s in pretty good shape, then you\u2019re not having to go there trying to find form.<\/p>\n \u201cAugusta is not where you find form. It exposes imperfections in form.\u201d<\/p>\n Scheffler rarely finds himself in poor form in any tournament, particularly here, the only major played on the same course year after year.<\/p>\n In 136 career PGA Tour starts he\u2019s made 117 cuts, posted 62 top tens and 46 top fives. His 13 victories, 10 runner-ups and 11 third-place finishes mean he\u2019s finished among the top three a staggering 25% of the time.<\/p>\n And having won twice at Augusta certainly gives him a mental edge over McIlroy and anyone else in the field who hasn\u2019t won here.<\/p>\n \u201cHaving had success on the golf course, getting around the golf course, you have the visuals,\u201d Smith said. \u201cYou have the feel of the crowd. You have the gravity of the moment. How big that tournament is. How much it means.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have all those ingredients and you\u2019ve fed off of them for your successes. And I think Scottie, even the year before last, just didn\u2019t have it go in the right direction, but you\u2019re still top 10 in the Masters.\u201d<\/p>\n Scheffler on Sunday will cruise onto Magnolia Lane, be warmly received at the security gate, and feel at home all week.<\/p>\n Once again he will happily hand out trophies on Sunday to the national junior Drive, Chip & Putt winners.<\/p>\n Scheffler is scheduled to play a practice round with his mom, Diane, a privilege afforded to all former champions in the field. Last year Scheffler played a practice round with sister Molly; and he had sister Sara caddie for him in the Wednesday par 3 tournament.<\/p>\n Two years ago Scheffler\u2019s practice round was with older sister Callie.<\/p>\n Scottie and the Schefflers practically have become royalty here. When he hosts, for the second time, the Champions dinner on Tuesday night, the menu will be Scheffler-Texas flavored.<\/p>\n There will be \u201cScottie style sliders\u201d \u2014 french fries atop two thin patties with cheese between each patty \u2014 like he eats at Burger House in Dallas.<\/p>\n There will be \u201cPapa Scheff\u2019s meatball & ravioli bites\u201d — the meatballs a recipe of Scottie\u2019s father Scott and the ravioli a self-depricating wink about the Christmas mishap. And the first-course soup offering of Texas-style chili is Randy Smith\u2019s recipe.<\/p>\n Sometime early in the tournament week, Scheffler will slip away to one of his favorite spots, an upstairs patio outside the players locker room.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have a little view of the first tee and No. 10 and the golf course and it\u2019s a pretty cool spot to sit and watch,\u201d he said. \u201cJust kind of sitting there watching the crowds, enjoying the sights and sounds of Augusta and nobody really knows you\u2019re there, so it\u2019s nice.\u201d<\/p>\n Scheffler paused and laughed.<\/p>\n \u201cI kind of gave myself away with that one.
