Stubbornness: A Quality of The Stoneleigh P Owners<\/h1>\n

Stubbornness is one of the most notable qualities of the owners of The Stoneleigh P, a 51-year-old Dallas bar.<\/p>\n

But, sometimes, things change.<\/p>\n

Like this: After serving the Dallas \u201cfringe\u201d community for 50 years, the Stoneleigh P lost its lease in Uptown. It moved from Maple Avenue to Lemmon Avenue in Dallas, against founder Tom Garrison\u2019s wishes.<\/p>\n

History of The Stoneleigh P<\/h2>\n

He\u2019d dug his heels in on plenty of other things since the bar opened in 1973, though. Ketchup would never be served with the P\u2019s famous burgers, he once said.<\/p>\n

Tom Garrison co-founded the Stoneleigh P, which has become one of Dallas’ most legendary bars. Old habits die hard here.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you, a Yankee?\u201d he\u2019d bark at anybody asking for the red stuff. Then he\u2019d grin like a Cheshire cat.<\/p>\n

Changes Over Time<\/h3>\n

Well, ketchup was added years later, after his daughter Laura Garrison suggested the bar add french fries to the menu. Fries need ketchup, she said.<\/p>\n

Tom allowed it. Begrudgingly.<\/p>\n

Besides, they still had the no-Coors thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s one thing he won\u2019t do, it\u2019s add Coors,\u201d Laura told The Dallas Morning News in 2023. The P had always been proudly anti-conformity, and Tom thought selling Coors was like joining a popularity contest.<\/p>\n

The Coors Conundrum<\/h4>\n

For the bar\u2019s 52nd birthday month \u2014 April \u2014 Laura is adding Coors Banquet and Coors Light to the menu. She\u2019s even bringing in \u201cobnoxious\u201d Coors signs so nobody misses the memo.<\/p>\n

But why?<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s not one day that goes by when we\u2019re not asked for Coors,\u201d Laura said. \u201cIf people keep asking for it, why don\u2019t we just do it?\u201d<\/p>\n

The Challenge<\/h5>\n

Laura challenges customers that if more than 2,000 Coors beers are sold between April 1 and May 1, 2025, it\u2019ll stay on the menu for good.<\/p>\n

Her dad\u2019s mad, but he isn\u2019t fighting her on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe sees the signs and snarls,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Laura Garrison’s dad started the Stoneleigh P in 1973. She runs it now. Slowly things have changed: the condiments, the neighborhood and now the beer list.<\/p>\n

What’s Next?<\/h6>\n

It may not seem like a major move, but for Stoneleigh P loyalists, this is record-scratch stuff. Tom proudly left Coors off the menu for decades. Except for that one time, when a beer rep told Tom decades ago he\u2019d win a trip to Hawaii if he sold Coors to the Stoneleigh P.
