WASHINGTON \u2014 FCC Chairman Brendan Carr faced tough questioning Wednesday in his first Senate testimony since suggesting ABC\u2019s network licenses could be pulled after late-night host Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s comments about the assassination of Charlie Kirk.<\/p>\n
Sen. Ted Cruz, who called the hearing as chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, joined Democrats in criticizing Carr\u2019s \u201cdangerous\u201d comments at the time, saying the federal regulator sounded like a \u201cmafioso.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo long as there is a public interest standard, shouldn\u2019t it be understood to encompass robust First Amendment protections to ensure that the FCC cannot use it to chill speech?\u201d Cruz asked Carr.<\/p>\n
The FCC chief agreed with Cruz before pivoting to echo the criticisms of Democrats pressuring Fox News.<\/p>\n
Cruz moved on to other topics, but Democrats on the panel were far from done with the issue.<\/p>\n
One after another quoted Cruz\u2019s \u201cmafioso\u201d comments to bolster their own scathing criticism of Carr\u2019s comments on Kimmel and ABC.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are not reinvigorating the public interest standard, you are weaponizing the public interest standard,\u201d Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., told Carr as he asked repeatedly whether the FCC chief regrets his statements.<\/p>\n
Carr declined to take back his Kimmel comments.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy job is to enforce the law as passed by Congress. That includes a public interest standard, and broadcast TV is fundamentally different than any other media\u2019s,\u201d Carr told Markey.<\/p>\n
Markey countered that Carr was refusing to accept accountability for his \u201cabuse of power\u201d by suggesting media companies are acting on their own to police their own content rather than responding to the implicit threats.<\/p>\n
\u201cActually you\u2019re now the chairman of the Federal Censorship Commission,\u201d Markey said, which drew a laugh from Carr. \u201cAnd these broadcasters, they feel that censorship. Your broad authority over the media industry, especially broadcasters, your words and actions matter.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carr said later in the hearing that his Kimmel comments did not represent threats to revoke a license.<\/p>\n
ABC suspended Kimmel for days after his comments about the man accused of killing Kirk.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,\u201d Kimmel said on the show.<\/p>\n
Carr publicly criticized those statements during an interview and highlighted the FCC\u2019s role in granting broadcast licenses, along with the obligation for licensed stations to operate in the public interest.<\/p>\n
On his podcast shortly afterward, Cruz played Carr\u2019s statements and then repeated the word \u201cno\u201d five times.<\/p>\n

High-ranking federal officials threatening a network in such a way is \u201cdangerous as hell\u201d because it could result in conservatives facing future government censorship, Cruz said.<\/p>\n
Cruz\u2019s criticism of Carr put him at odds with President Donald Trump, who also has floated the idea of revoking network licenses over negative coverage.<\/p>\n
