For years, SMU couldn\u2019t get students to come in off the Boulevard for a game, then when they finally do for Saturday\u2019s 26-20 upset of 10th-ranked Miami in overtime, they make off with the furniture.<\/p>\n

The Mustangs, 4-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, suddenly find themselves back in the running for the league title after pulling off their first upset of a top-10 team since the \u201883 Cotton Bowl. They hadn\u2019t won a game at home over a top-10 team since 1974, a 51-year period covering at least three home stadiums.<\/p>\n

Consequently, you could see how people might get a little worked up Saturday afternoon on the Hilltop. And that was before Georgia Tech \u2014 previously one of only two teams undefeated in ACC play, along with Virginia \u2014 lost to North Carolina State.<\/p>\n
SMU\u2019s celebration will cost the school $50,000, payable to the ACC\u2019s Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship account, which could use an acronym, to say the least.<\/p>\n
\u201cI neither condone nor support it, for the record,\u201d SMU president Jay Hartzell posted about the vandalism, \u201cbut I\u2019ll pay the fine …\u201d<\/p>\n
He followed the post with a Pony Up and red and blue hearts, just to show he wasn\u2019t really mad at the perpetrators.<\/p>\n
The good news is, fans took down only the south goal posts, leaving the north for another day. The Mustangs will have a hard time topping Saturday\u2019s results. But, if they beat 14th-ranked Louisville on Nov. 22, Hartzell might want to station a perimeter around his end zones.<\/p>\n
By the way: After a monthlong absence due to an unfortunate take by several SMU officials, \u201cPony Up\u201d is back. The blowback from a Dallas Morning News report about the athletic department\u2019s marketing fiasco was so intense, officials apparently caved. Impact journalism at its finest.<\/p>\n
