A man died after being shot by Frisco police as officers attempted to serve a warrant, the man\u2019s family said Saturday. Family members told The Dallas Morning News that as of Saturday, police have shared little information with them about the circumstances that led to the shooting death of Gregory Dylan Sheppard, 43.<\/p>\n
When reached by The News Saturday via email, Frisco police deferred comments to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The department\u2019s Rangers division is investigating the shooting. Texas DPS also declined comment. Frisco police on Monday issued a news release in which the department said Sheppard was shot and killed after pointing a weapon at officers.<\/p>\n

Frisco police said the shooting occurred at about 6 p.m. Thursday in the 5400 block of Travis Drive inside a gated community. Police said officers were attempting to serve felony warrants on both Sheppard and his partner when the shooting occurred. Police said Sheppard pointed a weapon at an officer, who then drew his weapon and fatally shot Sheppard.<\/p>\n

Adam Gain, Sheppard\u2019s stepbrother, said Sheppard\u2019s dad was awakened in the middle of the night by a state trooper, who informed him Sheppard had been shot by police. Gain said investigators have told the family police were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Sheppard\u2019s partner, who lived with him at his home, at the time of the shooting. The warrant stemmed from an October 2024 incident, Gain said.<\/p>\n
Police told the family that Sheppard was holding a gun at the time of the shooting and that preliminary investigations indicate the shooting was \u201cjustified,\u201d Gain said. Police have not provided the family with body camera footage or an account of what led to the shooting, Gain said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe understand they were here to serve a warrant,\u201d Gain said. \u201cIt\u2019s not clear how we got from there to Dylan getting shot and killed.\u201d Sheppard went by his middle name, Dylan. Gain said it was not in his stepbrother\u2019s nature to pull a gun on police. One of Sheppard\u2019s best friends is a police officer, and while Sheppard owned a gun, he was a responsible gun owner and possessed a license to carry it, Gain said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no possible world I can imagine where Dylan would have ever drawn a weapon or made a threatening gesture towards a police officer,\u201d Gain said. \u201cIt\u2019s just not his style. He is very respectful of authority.\u201d<\/p>\n
April Gain, Sheppard\u2019s stepsibling, told The News that Sheppard was an upstanding member of his community. \u201cHe has no criminal history, and there is nothing in the 30 years that I\u2019ve known him that suggests that he would behave inappropriately,\u201d April Gain said. \u201cSo we don\u2019t understand what could have happened, and it just doesn\u2019t line up with what we know about him.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no transparency at this point,\u201d April Gain said. Adam Gain described his stepbrother as dorky and quick to smile. He said Sheppard was an avid golfer and outdoorsman who had a master\u2019s degree in geology. \u201cSomeone needs to explain to us what happened,\u201d Adam Gain said. \u201cAnd I think the biggest source of frustration right now is we have so many more questions and inconsistencies than we do answers.\u201d<\/p>\n
