(October 7, 2025) Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) will begin distributing annual notifications on the Lead and Copper Service Line Inventory to DWU customers, in compliance with the yearly notification requirement of the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Lead and Copper Rule (LCR). The notifications will be mailed starting in early October through November 2025 to approximately 225,000 customers whose service line materials are currently listed as \u201cunknown\u201d in the utility\u2019s inventory.<\/p>\n
The notifications will advise customers to complete a Customer Service Line Survey to identify the material composition of their water service lines. The survey provides tips on locating and identifying the material of the water service line, including details on how it connects to the home or building. The federal LCR was revised in 2024 and requires public water systems nationwide to develop and maintain a public inventory of water service lines \u2013 the pipe that connects water mains to homes and businesses. DWU\u2019s efforts to eliminate lead service lines and components that could leach lead into the water began more than 47 years ago. Additionally, Dallas\u2019 water treatment process includes proven corrosion control methods that can prevent lead from leaching into the water system. The City of Dallas Water Utilities is a \u201cSuperior\u201d Rated Water System, the highest rating awarded by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). DWU\u2019s water meets or exceeds all state and federal requirements for water quality and is safe to drink.<\/p>\n
DWU continues its efforts to update the Service Line Inventory. The LCR regulation includes a 10-year timeline for the completion of the Service Line Inventory and the replacement of any lead and galvanized lines found as part of this effort.
