A North Texas man who attempted to enter a church with a rifle last year was sentenced to federal prison this week on a weapons charge stemming from a separate earlier incident.

Russell Alan Ragsdale Jr., 25, was sentenced on Thursday to five years and six months in prison followed by three years of supervised release, according to a federal court documents. He pleaded guilty to federal charges of possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of a controlled substance.
The charge stemmed from a 2022 incident in which Ragsdale was accused of fatally shooting his roommate in Seagoville while the two were intoxicated on hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Ragsdale was charged with murder in Dallas County in that incident, but the case was later dropped.
According to federal court documents, Ragsdale and his roommate both took psychedelic mushrooms together in Feb. 2022.
Ragsdale called 911 in the early hours of Feb. 3, 2022 and reported he had shot his roommate after an altercation in which his roommate attacked him, according to court documents. Police arrested Ragsdale and seized several firearms and a little under 2 grams of mushrooms, court documents said.
Ragsdale was federally charged in November 2024 after he allegedly attempted to enter a Dallas church with a rifle. According to court documents, he entered the church alongside other parishioners, left and attempted to return while armed with a rifle.
He was unable to enter the church as parishioners had locked the door, and was arrested by police.
Investigators learned about the 2022 murder case while investigating the church incident and learned about his drug use leading up to the shooting, officials said in a news release.
Ragsdale’s attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
