“They were just down there yesterday fishing and enjoying the night,” said Ryan Brake, a grandson of the couple.

He said the family received a call from their uncle about the catastrophic flooding.

“He was awakened by his RV being washed away. He was just barely able to get him and his wife and his dogs out,” said Brake.

The grandparents were in a cabin nearby, and family members were able to reach them by phone.

“From there we were able to wake them up and let them know what was going on,” described Brake.

He said about seven minutes passed after that phone call, the situation worsened.

“Between that phone call and the time that my uncle was able to reach where the cabins were, they were saying in that 7-minute span of time, cabins had been completely washed away,” said Brake.

Cellphone video sent from another relative showed the empty spots where the cabins once stood.

The couple’s family said they called the campsite, which confirmed cabins had been swept away.

“They just had kind of let us know, that they were extremely sorry, and that the cabins were just washed away,” said Brake.

The Burleson said the grandparents live in Abilene but have family in North Texas. They have three children, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The family is asking anyone with information to contact them.

“We’re all hoping for the best and praying big at this point. We are putting it in God’s hands,” said Brianna Newton, who is also an adult granddaughter of the couple.

Meteorologists said heavy tropical storms dumped as much as 14 inches of rain in the area, causing the Guadalupe River to rise in Hunt to near-record depths overnight. Between 1 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Friday, the river rose from about 7.5 feet to nearly 30 feet — a 22-foot rise in about three hours. The NWS said they think the river was even higher, but that the gauge was underwater and was no longer reporting data.
