Four officers involved in a fatal shooting on the campus of Texas Tech last month have been found justified in their use of lethal force during the incident, according to a news release Wednesday from the university.

The Lubbock Metropolitan Special Crimes Unit’s investigation found that the officers — identified as Levi Ridley, James Black III, Tanner Eade and Dante Prater — used necessary force during the June 24 shootout with the suspect.

The findings by investigators were submitted to the Lubbock County district attorney, who agreed with their conclusion, according to the news release.

The officers have been taken off of administrative leave and allowed to return to active duty once an administrative review is complete, the news release said.

The four officers were shot at when they approached a vehicle they believed was “suspicious” while responding to an unrelated traffic stop.

The shooter, identified as Rhino Simboli, 63, exchanged fire with officers. Investigators have said previously that Simboli was from Ohio but had ties to Florida and Texas.

Officer Black was struck by Simboli’s car and by gunfire, and was still being treated as of Wednesday, according to the university.

Officer Ridley was struck by gunfire, but has since been released from the hospital, according to the news release. Simboli was pronounced dead at the scene.

Black and Ridley both will remain on leave as they continue to recover.
