Wings Precautionary Approach with Star Rookie

Must read

Dallas Wings rookie standout Paige Bueckers did not play in Saturday’s 79-71 win against the Washington Mystics due to a right knee injury, but her absence was no cause for alarm.

Wings coach Chris Koclanes said ahead of Saturday’s game that sitting Bueckers, who had been experiencing some soreness, was just precautionary.

“Doing our due diligence and managing what’s best for her long-term health,” Koclanes said.

After scoring a team-high 27 points in the Wings’ 94-86 loss to the Indiana Fever on Friday night at American Airlines Center, Bueckers still attended Saturday’s game and hyped up her teammates.

The No. 1 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft missed four games earlier this season due to concussion protocol and later illness, but the rookie is still averaging 18.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 1.8 steals. Bueckers, a UConn product, missed her entire junior season in 2022-23 due to an ACL tear in her left knee.

She’s not the only Wings player who has had injury issues this season.

Guard-forward DiJonai Carrington has missed the Wings’ last four games due to a rib injury. The team announced on June 16 that forward Maddy Siegrist would miss time after sustaining a right knee fracture. A week earlier, the Wings ruled guard Tyasha Harris out for the remainder of the 2025 season after she underwent a left knee surgery.

Injuries have piled up around the WNBA, which expanded from 40 games to 44 this season. The Wings played back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday.

Bueckers told reporters ahead of Friday’s game with the Fever that “it’s a blessing to play in this league.”

“At the same time, you want there to be the best performance,” she said on the WNBA schedule.

“So I think player safety and player health is the main concern and making sure that that’s in the forefront and most important. It’s tough trying to fit 44 games into a compact schedule, but everybody’s dealing with it, so you can’t use it as an excuse.”
