Initial claims about new Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens backing out on his namesake youth camp in Pittsburgh were clarified in a statement released by the camp’s organizers Friday.

Pickens, who was acquired by the Cowboys from the Steelers in May, was set to appear at the “George Pickens Youth Camp” this week at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh. On Wednesday, however, a message was sent to participants by TruEdge Sports accusing the wide receiver of backing out of an agreement to appear.

“We were promptly assured [after the trade] that George remained committed to the camp and intended to show up for the families who had registered,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, as of last week, TruEdge was notified by George’s team that he has decided to walk back on his word and is no longer interested in attending the camp.”

According to a new statement released by TruEdge on Friday, however, that accusation was “not only inappropriate but inconsistent with our values as an organization.”

The statement reads: “Recently, a statement was issued regarding our scheduled youth camp with George Pickens that did not accurately reflect the full scope of communication or the context surrounding the event.

“At no point did George communicate with us directly, and our communications with George’s representatives led to confusion about the camp’s status and future direction.”

TruEdge said Wednesday that Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth will appear in Pickens’ place, as well as some other potential Pittsburgh players, for a rescheduled camp July 20 at Highmark Stadium.

The company said it recognizes that Pickens is navigating a “significant career transition” after being swapped to Dallas on May 7 in exchange for a pair of draft picks.

Since arriving in Dallas, the former second-round pick made his debut in a Cowboys uniform during offseason workouts, getting reps with Dak Prescott and his new teammates last month.
