An armed woman brought traffic on Interstate 45 in the Houston area to a standstill for hours Thursday while law enforcement authorities tried to resolve the situation and get vehicles moving again.
The incident resulted in massive gridlock that stretched for miles in both directions on the interstate known in the area as the North Freeway and located in a city notorious for rage-inducing traffic backups.
The woman, whose identity was pending, hugged law enforcement deputies as she was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m., according to local news media reports.
No injuries were reported and there were no repots of shots being fired during the four-hour ordeal, which began around 2 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-45 at Cypresswood Drive.

According to a social media post by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, deputies were called to the area on a report of a woman armed with a pistol who was seated on a collapsible lawn chair in the middle of the main lanes of the interstate.
KTRK-TV reported that the woman had intentionally struck a tractor-trailer before she exited her vehicle and had a seat in the roadway. The woman had pointed the gun at her head and refused to put it down, sheriff’s Capt. Steve Wilson said on X.
Said Sheriff Gonzalez: “The woman is expressing suicidal thoughts. Crisis Intervention Response Team (CIRT) members are in communication.”
Pictures taken by local news reporters and deputies that were posted to social media showed a huge law enforcement response, that was still eclipsed by the numbers of idle vehicles on the roadway that were not moving.
The incident generated several angry comments on social media.
“This is what caused that HUGE traffic?” one person wrote. “A single woman?”
Sheriff’s deputies said the woman was taken into custody for a mental health evacuation after she put the gun down.
