Arrest Made in Sexual Assault Case

A 32-year-old man was arrested after tips from the public aided police in identifying him as the person suspected of committing a sexual assault last month, police said.

Alex Gabriel Suarez was booked into the Dallas County jail Tuesday, and he faces a charge of sexual assault. According to a news release from Dallas police, the sexual assault occurred April 25.

In that case, police said a woman was sleeping in her apartment in the 9700 block of Dale Crest Drive in Northwest Dallas when the suspect entered through an unsecured window and assaulted her.

The Incident

According to Suarez’s arrest warrant affidavit, the woman was awoken around 6:30 a.m. when her teenage daughter notified her an intruder was in their apartment. The woman encountered the suspect, who sexually assaulted her before leaving. The woman later underwent a sexual assault examination and a DNA profile was obtained.

Police said last month that the same suspect is believed to have committed a sexual assault April 26, in the 8800 block of Fair Oaks Crossing in the northeast part of the city. Police did not say, however, if Suarez is believed to have committed both assaults.

Investigation and Arrest

Dallas police released photos of the suspect shortly after the assaults were reported, and said Wednesday that community tips and “extensive investigative measures” led them to identify Suarez as the suspect.

According to the arrest affidavit, Suarez was also able to be identified as a suspect after a match was found between his DNA and the suspect profile in the Combined DNA Index System, a national database used by law enforcement to compare DNA profiles.

Current Status

Further charges may be filed against Suarez “pending forensic analysis,” police said.

Suarez remained in the Dallas County jail Wednesday in lieu of a $100,000 bond. It was not clear if he had retained an attorney.

Conclusion

The arrest of Alex Gabriel Suarez is a significant development in the investigation of the sexual assault that occurred in April. The community’s help in providing tips and the extensive investigative measures taken by the police department led to the identification of the suspect. The case is ongoing, and further charges may be filed pending forensic analysis.
