Introduction to Sebastian Walcott
BOSTON — Evaluators believe that Texas Rangers teenaged phenom Sebastian Walcott could one day soon become baseball’s top overall prospect.
He took one step closer to that prestigious mark Wednesday.
Rising Through the Ranks
Walcott, 19, climbed to No. 8 in Baseball America’s updated top 100 prospects list after a solid first month at Double-A Frisco. He’s the third-ranked shortstop prospect on the list, and according to Baseball America, and “could be a true five-tool player” if he continues to develop. It’s the highest that a Rangers prospect has been ranked since left fielder Wyatt Langford was also No. 8 prior to last season.
The Rangers signed Walcott, a 6-4 talent from the Bahamas, to a $3.2 million bonus prior to the 2023 season. He cruised through the complex leagues and Single-A in his first year-and-a-half of professional baseball and became the youngest player to reach the Double-A level last season when he joined the RoughRiders in September.
Walcott’s Performance
Walcott — who joined an exclusive class of teenage shortstops to start on opening day for Frisco — has slashed .245/.359/.367 with eight extra base hits and six steals in his first 26 games this season. His .726 OPS is the best of any teenager at the Double-A level this year.
“He’s just incredibly talented, and he’s doing things you wouldn’t expect of a guy his age,” Baseball America’s Josh Norris told The Dallas Morning News before the start of the season.
“He’s got very little professional experience, relatively speaking, and he’s still mashing and showing all sorts of flashes of these loud tools that usually are reserved for guys that become superstars.”
Other Notable Prospects
Right-handed pitcher Kumar Rocker, who made his MLB debut last season and broke camp with the Rangers this year, is the team’s only other ranked prospect at No. 61. It’s a drop from his preseason position (No. 20) after he posted an 8.10 ERA in five starts before a shoulder impingement landed him on the injured list.
