Man Arrested for Two Separate Shootings in Dallas
A man is in jail and facing murder charges after Dallas police connected two separate shootings by tying bullet casings, a cellphone number, and a vehicle to both scenes, records show.
Garrett Hudgens, 30, is facing murder charges in connection with fatal shootings on April 4 in West Oak Cliff and April 23 near Fair Park, police said. He was booked into Dallas County jail just before 8:40 p.m. Friday, and online records show his bail is set at $2 million. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
First Shooting Incident
On April 4, police responded to an early morning shooting in the 1200 block of North Cockrell Hill Road. Jimmie Walker, 51, was found shot at the scene, where he died.
According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, a .45-caliber bullet casing was found near the victim.
Security camera footage showed a black Chevrolet Tahoe with damage to the front driver’s side at the scene. Someone was observed exiting the vehicle, following Walker on foot and raising their arm while Walker had his back turned.
Second Shooting Incident
On April 23, officers responded to an early morning shooting in the 3700 block of Parry Avenue. Percy Howard, 71, died at the scene after being shot, police said.
A .45-caliber bullet casing was recovered from the scene, which detectives found matched the bullet casing from the April 4 scene, according to the warrant. Security camera footage from the April 23 scene also showed a black SUV at the scene at the time of the shooting, believed to be a Chevrolet Tahoe with similar damage to it.
Investigation and Evidence
With these matching facts, detectives were able to obtain cellphone data for the locations and times of both shootings. A number registered to Hudgens was determined to be the most common at both locations, the warrant said.
Police also determined that a 2012 black Chevrolet Tahoe is registered to a person believed to be a family member of Hudgens. The license plate number for that vehicle was scanned at times and locations near the shooting deaths, per the warrant. Further cellphone data matched Hudgens to the times and locations of the license plate scans, the affidavit says.
Arrest and Charges
On Friday, Dallas police began conducting surveillance on Hudgens’ residence and saw the Tahoe parked in the driveway and saw Hudgens enter and exit the residence.
Based on the license plate records, cellphone information, and bullet casings, Hudgens was arrested on two counts of murder. It was not immediately clear what led to either shooting.
