Introduction to the Incident
A judge on Monday refused to reduce the multimillion-dollar bond for the 17-year-old accused of shooting at least four people at Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas last week.
Tracy Haynes Jr., 17, is being held in Dallas County jail and is facing six charges of aggravated assault mass shooting. According to the Dallas County District Attorney’s office and jail records, Haynes’ total bond is $3.1 million.
However, Haynes’ defense attorney Temani Adams told The Dallas Morning News on Monday afternoon that one of the charges — with a $600,000 bond — is being recalled, making his actual total bond roughly $2.5 million.
What Happened During the Shooting
On April 15, officers were dispatched at about 1 p.m. to the school in the 5500 block of Langdon Road in southern Dallas. Active call logs for Dallas police show that at least 60 units responded to the scene.
According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, Haynes was seen on surveillance footage entering the school through a door after an unidentified student opened it for him. Haynes then walked through the hallways until he spotted several male students.
Haynes then displayed a firearm and opened fire “indiscriminately,” striking multiple students before approaching one student “who was not able to run.” Haynes then appeared to take a “point-blank” shot, the affidavit said.
Aftermath of the Shooting
Haynes turned himself in to police that night.
Adams said Haynes’ aunt — who other outlets have identified as Cassandra Griffin — testified during the bond reduction hearing Monday morning.
Griffin said Haynes informed her about a group of men who were part of a violent gang and kept telling her ‘they’re going to kill me,’ Adams told The News. She said the family also had been receiving threats from that group.
Allegedly, one of the students who was shot during the incident was a part of the gang, Adams said.
Previous Incidents at the School
Last week’s gunfire at Wilmer-Hutchins High School occurred barely a year after another shooting took place there. In April 2024, a student brought a gun to the campus and shot another student in the leg.
