Nico Harrison’s Rationale for Trading Quentin Grimes for Caleb Martin

Must read

The Dallas Mavericks’ Trade Decision

The Dallas Mavericks have been criticized heavily for trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, but general manager Nico Harrison made another transaction that week that hasn’t yielded immediate results.

On Monday during his end-of-season news conference, Harrison was asked about the Feb. 4 trade of Quentin Grimes and a 2025 second-round pick to the Philadelphia 76ers for Caleb Martin and a 2030 second-round pick.

The Trade Details

The move was met with scrutiny because Grimes, a 24-year-old two-way talent, flourished in his final 28 games in Philadelphia, averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Meanwhile, Martin was limited by a hip sprain and played in just 14 games in Dallas. Harrison amended the trade because of Martin’s injury and managed to snag a second-round pick from Philadelphia.

But acquiring Martin pushed the Mavericks to the brink of the first salary cap apron, limited to 14 guaranteed contracts, and they could not sign another player to a standard contract until they converted Brandon Williams’ two-way deal April 10.

The Mavericks were also limited to signing just one 10-day contract, which was used by 7-foot center Moses Brown.

Salary Cap Management

“We looked at our managing of the salary cap as maximizing it to its full potential,” Harrison said Monday. “Caleb was one of the players we were able to get that just barely fit under the apron. We took that and we knew what we were giving up. We knew we would only be able to sign one 10-day contract.

The number of injured Dallas players didn’t help the situation, either, Harrison told reporters.

“The chances of 10 players out of 18 available players being hurt, we took that risk to get a player like Caleb that we’ve liked forever,” he said. “We did it and now, to your point, did we learn something? Absolutely, that there are scenarios where you can have more than 10 players hurt, which doesn’t typically happen. That will be something that we will keep in mind as we move forward.”

Quentin Grimes’ Performance

Grimes, who was acquired from the Detroit Pistons last offseason in exchange for Tim Hardaway Jr., will become a restricted free agent this summer. He could not come to terms on a rookie contract extension with the Mavericks before the season began.

Grimes averaged 10.2 points and 3.8 rebounds and shot a career-high 39.8% from 3 in 47 games in Dallas. He averaged 21.9 points and 5.2 rebounds and shot 37.3% from 3 in 28 games with the Sixers.

Rationale Behind the Trade

Harrison also delivered his rationale behind the decision to part ways with Grimes during his infamous roundtable discussion last week, saying it was more about acquiring Martin to add to Dallas’ new defensive philosophy.

“It was really about getting Caleb Martin,” Harrison said. “It was less about Grimes. We obviously traded for Grimes and we got a good look at Grimes. Great player. I think it worked out for both teams. It worked out for him. He’s in a free agent situation, so he got to go to a team where he could shoot all the balls and really display his offense and for us, we weren’t interested in that. We were interested in how he could help us win games.”

When asked why the Mavericks attached a second-round pick to a deal knowing they were receiving an older player, Harrison defended his decision by pointing out Martin’s value to the team.

“Well, if you don’t like Caleb, then you’re not gonna like the trade,” Harrison said. “But we value Caleb more so and we also got a second-round pick back.”

Conclusion

The trade between the Dallas Mavericks and the Philadelphia 76ers has been met with scrutiny, but Harrison believes that acquiring Martin was the right decision for the team. Despite the challenges that came with the trade, Harrison is confident that the team will learn from the experience and move forward.
