The Incident

Dallas Mavericks’ 25-year-old guard Brandon Williams was arrested on Saturday at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Saturday for marijuana possession, according to an arrest report.

The Mavericks declined to comment.

According to the arrest report, DFW Airport police were dispatched at about 10:05 a.m. to Terminal C on reports of a drug violation. Police spoke with a TSA screener, who said they had found a black container with about 1.5 ounces of marijuana inside a suitcase belonging to Williams.

Williams told police it was his bag, but argued he did not pack it and that his manager did. He was placed under arrest and faces a charge of possession of marijuana under two ounces, which is a misdemeanor.

Response from the Team and Airport

A spokesperson for D-FW Airport didn’t immediately comment when reached by email Tuesday afternoon and said they were looking into the incident. The Dallas Morning News’ requests for information from the Transportation Security Administration were not immediately returned.

Williams’ Career and Recent Performance

Williams has missed the Mavs’ last two games. Prior to the team’s loss to Oklahoma City on Monday, he was upgraded to questionable for the game.

He has been listed as questionable for the Mavs’ Wednesday game against the Pacers. Williams cited personal reasons for his absence in the prior two games and potentially Wednesday’s matchup.

Dallas signed Williams to a multi-year NBA deal on Apr. 8 after a solid showing for the team near the end of the 2024-25 season.

Williams went undrafted in the 2021 draft out of Arizona, but he spent his rookie season with the Westchester Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers. He joined the Mavericks for the 2023-24 season but appeared in only 17 games.

Personal Life

According to a social media post from Williams, he lost a close friend and former high school teammate, Kyle Owens, to leukemia on Sept. 30, the day the Mavs started training camp. The two played together at Crespi Carmelite High School in California.

Conclusion

The arrest of Brandon Williams is a significant development for the Dallas Mavericks, and the team’s response will be closely watched. Williams’ personal struggles and recent performance on the court have been notable, and this incident adds another layer to his story.

Staff writers Elissa Jorgensen and Sury Chakraborty contributed to this report.
