Cold Snap in Dallas-Fort Worth

Break out the sweaters — Wednesday is expected to be the coldest day of Dallas-Fort Worth’s current cold snap.

The temperature is expected to drop down to 48 degrees just after sunrise, but it should feel even colder. The wind chill, or how cold it feels to a person, is expected to be in the lower 40s, going as low as 41 degrees.

Temperatures should be in the 50s for most of the day, the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office said, with an afternoon high of 63 degrees. That’s nine degrees lower than the usual high for the end of October.

Wind Advisory

The bigger threat Wednesday should be the wind. North Texas is under a wind advisory, which warns of gusts up to 45 miles per hour.

The strong gusts started Tuesday, knocking out power at a DISD school and for thousands of other customers. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oncor’s outage report had nearly 12,000 customers without power across North Texas. It had reached nearly 20,000 earlier Wednesday.

The wind advisory also includes east and central Texas, Arkansas, most of Oklahoma and the western side of Louisiana. On top of the gusts, sustained winds should be 20 to 30 miles per hour until the advisory ends Wednesday evening.

Frost Advisory

While the wind advisory ends at 6 p.m. Wednesday, a frost advisory is following close behind, albeit for counties outside the core of the Dallas metro area.

Those counties include Parker, Wise, Montague and Cooke counties, which are expected to be under the advisory from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday.
