Texas A&M’s Le’Veon Moss Suffers Injury

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko gave an injury update on running back Le’Veon Moss during his weekly press conference on Monday.

“It’s an ankle, not a knee, which is a really positive sign,” Elko said. “He’s going to have to go get it looked at, and we’ll kind of figure out where it’s at. It certainly will not end his season, but it’s going to be a significant amount.”

The Injury and Its Impact

Moss went down with an injury in the second quarter of Texas A&M’s 34-17 victory over Florida on Saturday. He exited the game with five carries for 46 yards and a touchdown and did not return.

Moss was the SEC’s leading rusher before suffering a torn ACL and MCL against South Carolina last season.

Next Man Up

“Now Rueben [Owens II] has to be the primary ball carrier and that will open up some carries for Amari [Daniels] and Jamarion [Morrow] to get in there,” Elko said. “It’s a credit to what [running backs coach] Trooper Taylor does with that group and a credit to those kids that they’re ready to work when their number is called.”

As the Aggies’ leading rusher with 389 yards and four rushing touchdowns, A&M will miss Moss’ offensive output. The Walker, Louisiana native’s strong running between the tackles has allowed the Aggies offense to consistently run the ball, with Moss averaging 5.6 yards per carry.

Rueben Owens Steps Up

Owens, the next man up for the Aggies, was the projected starter last season before missing all but two games due to a preseason injury. The El Campo, Texas native trails Moss with 327 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Owens is utilized much more as a weapon in the receiving game than Moss.

“Rueben is a lot bigger than people give him credit for, he’s a lot thicker than people give him credit for,” Elko said. “Rueben is starting to hit his stride which has been really good. I think, you know, it took him a while to get back from his injury. He hasn’t had a ton of reps in this offense because of the injury.”

“It’s good for him to now, he’s kind of hitting his groove, and you know now it’s gonna be really big for him to go out there and shoulder the load.”

Coach Elko’s Thoughts

“I love Le’Veon, I wish Le’Veon was healthy, we’re going to miss him,” Elko said. “He’s been a warrior for this program. He’s given us everything he had to get ready for this season. I hope this goes as fast and as smooth as it can. But injuries are a part of SEC football.

“It’s just next-man-up mentality, and that’s not to dismiss what it’s going to mean to lose him, because he’s going to be a huge loss, but it has to be a next man up mentality in order for us to play in this conference.”
