Some areas of North Texas experienced damage from high winds and rain after the region was under a severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch early Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office had a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for Dallas County until 6:30 a.m. and a tornado watch was in effect until 11 a.m.

In Dallas and Fort Worth, severe weather alarms sounded at about 5:30 a.m.

At Dallas Love Field Airport, wind gusts were observed near 45 miles per hour for several hours Tuesday morning. The weather service reported just over 0.6 inches of rain falling between 4 a.m. – 8 a.m.

Substantial power outages exceeding 276,000 affected customers were reported just after 6 a.m. in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The numbers included about 105,000 customers in Dallas County, 82,000 in Collin County, 45,000 in Tarrant County and 47,000 without power in Denton County.

By 10:30 a.m., those numbers had dropped to about 63,000 customers without power in Dallas County, 45,000 in Collin County, and just under 30,000 each in Denton and Tarrant counties.

Wind Advisory and Wildfire Threat

A wind advisory also remains in effect for North Texas, including Dallas and Fort Worth, until 9 p.m.

In addition, as post-storm humidity levels drop and wind gusts reach up to 50 mph, the weather service said areas along and west of Interstate 35 should be aware of an elevated wildfire threat through Friday.

By Wednesday, cooler, drier weather will move into North Texas with highs in the upper 50s and lower 60s.

The weather service said the next chance for rain will arrive late Friday into Saturday morning.
