Dallas Mavericks Secure Key Player’s Future
A key member of the Dallas Mavericks’ rotation has secured his future with his hometown team.
The Mavericks have agreed to sign P.J. Washington to a contract extension of four years worth nearly $90 million, LIFT Sports Management, the agency that represents him, confirmed in an Instagram post. ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the news.
Since becoming extension eligible on Friday, the sides had until Oct. 20 to reach a deal and prevent Washington from becoming an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Washington also confirmed the extension Wednesday in a social media post on X. The caption read, “God is God” with an emoji resembling prayer hands.
Contract Details
Washington is coming off one of the best seasons of his seven-year career, and will be signed for five more years through the 2029-30 season — one year after teammates Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving and Daniel Gafford.
His starting salary during the 2026-27 season will be about $19.8 million and reach roughly $24.6 million in the final year of the deal.
Washington joins Kyrie Irving and Daniel Gafford as the third player the Mavericks reached contract extensions with this offseason. Irving signed a new three-year deal worth $118 million and Gafford tacked on a new three-year contract worth $60 million to the final year of his existing deal, which expires after 2025-26.
Performance and Expectations
Washington averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game on 45.3% overall shooting and 38.1% from three in the 2024-25 season. It was a season when the 6-7 forward was one of the most consistent players in a season full of inconsistency due to the aftermath of the Luka Doncic trade and a massive amount of injury misfortune.
The 2025-26 season will be the final on the rookie scale extension he signed with the Charlotte Hornets on August 29, 2023, before his extension kicks in next summer. The Mavericks envision Washington playing alongside No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, whose primary position is also small forward.
“[Flagg] did a workout while [Washington] was here,” Harrison said. “P.J. was there. I said, ‘P.J., think you guys can play together?’ He said, ‘Oh yeah, we can play together.’ I don’t see any jealousy.”
Acquisition and Impact
Washington was acquired with two second-round picks from Charlotte at the trade deadline during the 2023-24 season. He and Gafford, who was acquired in a separate trade with Washington, led the charge in the Mavericks’ defensive shift that led to a lengthy postseason run toward the 2024 NBA Finals.
