Officers pulled Kemp over for a traffic violation around 9:50 p.m. Tuesday in the 2700 block of East Belt Line Road, police said.

During the stop, officers suspected use of narcotics and a drug investigation commenced, police said. Kemp then brandished a handgun and threatened to shoot himself, according to police.

Kemp walked a short distance before running toward the 14900 block of Venture Drive in Farmers Branch, police said.

As officers chased Kemp, he was shot several times by an officer when he turned toward them while holding the gun, police said.

Kemp immediately received medical assistance. He was taken to a hospital and remains in critical condition, police said.
