Ranch Operations
The property could support one of the largest livestock operations in the country. Roughly 1,900 cow/calf pairs are currently being run on the ranch.
The ranch also serves as a commercial hunting destination. That area of New Mexico is known for its bull elk, mule deer, antelope and mountain lions. The ranch participates in a lucrative lease arrangement with Black Mountain Outfitters.
More than 276,000 acres of the property are leased to various state and federal entities, according to the listing.
Historical and Archaeological Sites
The property has historical and archaeological sites that include Anasazi petroglyphs, ruins, and the tumbled-down stone homes and corrals of New Mexico’s earliest homesteaders.
Background of the Seller
Donald R. Horton, the founder of the Arlington-based homebuilding firm that bears his name, died in May 2024 at the age of 74. The property was placed on the market following his death.
Conclusion
The sale of the Great Western Ranch is a significant transaction in the real estate market, especially given its massive size and potential for livestock operations and commercial hunting.
