Breaking News: Arrest Made in 3-Year-Old Homicide Case
After three years of investigating a homicide where a 34-year-old man was found dead inside an Arlington apartment, a man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting, authorities said Thursday.
Arlington police arrested 39-year-old Jason Reyes on a capital murder charge on Oct. 30, according to a news release from the department.
Reyes is currently being held at the Tarrant County Jail as of Thursday in lieu of $250,000 bail, according to jail records.
Reyes is accused of fatally shooting Alphonso Lewis Jr., 34, who was found dead on Dec. 10, 2021.
The Incident
On the day of the shooting, officers responded to an apartment complex in the 6300 block of Rivertrail Circle about 4:59 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting.
Inside an apartment, they found Lewis lying unresponsive in the kitchen with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. He died at the scene.
Evidence police said was found in the apartment suggested that Lewis and his suspected killer had engaged in “high-risk drug activity” at the time of the shooting.
Investigation and Arrest
Police said surveillance footage recovered by detectives shows a masked individual wearing gloves leaving the apartment complex shortly after the shooting.
In 2022, police said the department shared an image of the suspect to the public, which led to investigators receiving a tip that the individual looked similar to Reyes.
Detectives later learned through investigations that Reyes had previously sold drugs to Lewis, according to police.
Investigators believe that Reyes was there the night of the shooting and took Lewis’ phone, police said. Reyes’ phone “pinged” near the scene before the shooting. Following the shooting, police said both men’s phones pinged in the same locations across Arlington.
